Apple is strengthening its government affairs leadership as the technology giant prepares for a major executive transition. Nate Gatten will become vice president of Government Affairs on August 31, taking responsibility for the company’s engagement with policymakers.
The appointment comes just one day before John Ternus becomes Apple CEO on September 1. Tim Cook will move into the executive chairman role. Apple officially announced that leadership transition in April.
Nate Gatten Brings Years of Policy Experience
Gatten brings nearly a decade of government affairs experience from American Airlines to his new role. Earlier in his career, he headed global government relations and policy teams at JPMorgan Chase, giving him experience navigating the regulatory and political pressures faced by major companies.. Apple General Counsel Jennifer Newstead described Gatten as a strategic leader with extensive experience handling complicated policy environments.
Meanwhile, Apple will also reshape its existing government affairs team. Current government affairs leader Nick Ammann will report to Gatten. Tim Powderly, Matt Brown and Mike Orgill will also fall under his leadership.
Washington Relationships Take on Greater Importance
Gatten’s background could prove valuable as Apple manages relationships with the Trump administration and lawmakers in Washington. His previous work included engagement with Republican members of Congress.
Gatten also brings experience in finding common ground across political differences. His role on the Faith & Politics Institute’s board involves an organization dedicated to encouraging dialogue across party lines. For Apple, that could be particularly useful when dealing with policy debates in markets around the world.
A Strategic Appointment During Apple’s Transition
The appointment carries significance beyond politics. Gatten also has experience in real estate, which could prove useful as Apple expands stores, offices and other operations.
At the same time, his arrival comes during one of Apple’s biggest leadership changes in years. Ternus will succeed Cook as CEO on September 1, while Cook remains involved in areas including engagement with policymakers worldwide.
As a result, Gatten will enter his new position at a pivotal moment, helping shape Apple’s government relationships during its next leadership era.
